Welcome back for Term 2

I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all of our staff, parents and students for Term 2, 2022. I trust that everyone has now had an enjoyable and restful break and is ready to go for an exciting term ahead.

Our class teachers have commenced teaching our Term 2 units of work based on the Australian Curriculum and contextualised for our Camira students. The curriculum covered at Camira gives our students genuine opportunities to engage and connect with good quality learning each and every day. To help share what we cover each day, our school sends home copies of a curriculum map at the beginning of each term. The Curriculum Maps provide an overview of what content and assessment is being covered. These Curriculum Maps will be sent home by the end of this week with the Term 2 calendar.

This term is an exciting term for our school and we look forward to once again developing strong partnerships with you to ensure your child experiences positive growth in their education. There are many school events held this term so keep abreast through the school newsletter each fortnight.

This term, as in the past, the newsletter will be prepared once per fortnight and an E-Flash being sent every other week.

Year 6 Camp

The learning and fun continues for our Year 6 students who have ventured off for their annual school camp this week. Despite a few last minutes adjustments for COVID, we’ve been able to offer our camp program for our Year 6 students again in 2022. We hope they have a great week of learning, fun and good times hanging out with their friends.

Staffing Updates

We welcome Miss Allana Bartels to our Year 2 team this term. Miss Bartels is looking forward to getting to know all of the students and continuing their learning. Miss Bartels is no relation to our Deputy Principal – Mrs Bartels and takes over from Miss Lacey who had to take some unexpected sick leave.

In other staffing news, we’ve recently had a Social Worker appointed to our school. We welcome Mrs Chantal Meadlarkin into the Social Worker role. Our school will have a Social Worker position until our Psychologist is recruited.

We also welcome Ms Renee Tupicoff into our Guidance Officer role for Term 2. Ms Tupicoff is covering Ms Linklater-Steele for this term.

2023 PREP INFORMATION SESSION

Camira State School will be holding our 2023 Prep Information Session on Wednesday 4 May at 6:30pm in the Resource Centre. The school’s leadership team, Prep teachers and Early Years Transitions Officer will be in attendance to answer any questions. The session will outline the enrolment process, the Croclings program, what to expect from Prep and much more.

2023 Prep Enrolments

Camira SS is now taking enrolments for Prep students who will begin school in 2023. Prep is the first year of school and provides the foundation for your child's education. It is compulsory for Queensland children to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they enrol. Students born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018 are eligible to enrol in Prep 2023. Please contact administration to collect an enrolment pack.

KindyLinQ

Three short weeks of KindyLinQ to start the term, but our KindyLinQ children are packing even more fun and learning into their weeks, even though we have three Monday public holidays in a row. There are still spaces available for children who are 2½ - 3½  years of age. Contact administration for more information.

Playgroup

We are looking forward to seeing all of our Playgroup families on Friday 22 April after the Easter break.

Due to our ever-increasing numbers, families are asked to book their place each week prior to attending. Please contact Jenny Scarlett via email at jscar5@eq.edu.au to reserve your place.

ANZAC Day

On the morning of the 25th April, 1915, our Anzac’s landed on the Gallipoli peninsula with the aim of capturing Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey). After eight months of conflict with their Turkish opponents that included heavy causalities and hardship, the allied forces were eventually evacuated by the end of 1915. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. The Anzac’s left a powerful legacy and we commemorate ANZAC Day to remember the sacrifices made by those who died fighting for their country.

Capturing the spirit of our ANZAC’s at this current time in history is more important than ever. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps stands for many things that keep us united as a community through the Covid-19 crisis, particularly mateship and courage.

Our school ceremony will be held on Tuesday 26 April at 9am in the Activities Hall.  All families are welcome to attend.

Goodna Service

Camira State School has been invited to participate in the Goodna ANZAC Day March on Monday 25th April 2022. It would be great to have a large contingent of students from Camira at this event. Students attending the March should meet by 8:00am at the corner of Alice and Queen Street, on the Alice Street side along the Cecil Hotel (the Pink Pub). There will be multiple street closures around this event and it is advisable to plan ahead. Organizers for the ANZAC march anticipate the step off to be at approximately 8:15am. We will be marching down Queen Street and going around the Cenotaph into Church Street, where students will be able to sit and watch the ceremony. This proved to be a great vantage point in previous years. All students attending the March should be in full school uniform, including their Camira SS hat. Parents are welcome to join us for the March and gather near the students for the ceremony. Parents are asked to collect students from this area after the conclusion of the ceremony. While staff are attending the March and service,  parents are asked to stay, please do not ‘drop your child and leave’.

All students in attendance must be in full school uniform.

Second Step Pastoral Care

This term we commence our Second Step series of lessons. These research-based lessons promote the social-emotional development, safety and well-being of children across the school.

Week 2 Topic- Welcoming

Here at Camira State School, we want everyone to feel welcome and that they belong. We know we’re welcome when people smile at us and greet us with friendly words. We know we belong when we’re included and invited to play at recess. We know we belong when we notice the ways we’re all the same and accept the ways we’re different. This week, students will take time to greet others with a smile and invite them to play.

Information Reports

First week back and the Year 2’s are already well-underway with their new English unit, Information Reports. This week, the students have been learning about the Giant Panda’s appearance, habitat, diet and predators. They read a variety of texts, took notes, organised their notes, and then turned these into strong, informative paragraphs. The Year 2’s are very excited to find out what other animals they’ll be exploring this term.

Teaching and Learning Committee

Students never stop learning- and the same is just as true for teachers. Continuous professional development is something that is highly valued by the staff at Camira State School to ensure we plan and deliver effective teaching and learning, that supports, extends and engages all students.

Every fortnight, the Teaching & Learning Committee comes together to discuss current academic practice, and work on the school’s strategic plan. Over the past couple of months, the focus has been on reviewing and revitalising the teaching of Guided Reading, across Prep-Year 6.

Year 4 Engaged in Learning

Our Year 4 students’ learning is powering along in Week 1. This term our learning focus is on examining humour in poetry. Students will read and listen to a range of humorous poems by different authors. This week, they are identifying puns, structure and rhyming patterns of a poem.

Term 2 Curriculum Maps

Term 2 Curriculum Maps will be emailed home this week. These maps outline the curriculum that will be taught throughout the term, in each year level. I hope you are able to find the time to read through this document, so that you are informed about what your child is learning. Talking with your child at home about what they have learnt solidifies learning that has occurred at school.

Cluster Moderation

One of the pillars of our CSS Strategic Plan is ‘High Impact Teaching.’ It is of the upmost importance to our school to ensure that we give our teachers multiple opportunities to grow and improve as professionals. On 28 of April, our teachers participated in a cluster moderation with Carole Park State School and Woodcrest State College. Moderation processes supports confidence in teachers’ ability to make consistent and valid standards-based judgments about the quality of student responses to summative assessments. Teachers participated in collegial conversations to reach consensus about the quality of evidence demonstrated in student responses. Our teachers are continuing to work collaboratively to make sure that our students all receive the very best education.

On Friday 1 April we held the competition events for our Senior Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to all students that participated in these races and it was great to see our students give their best effort in the 2km and 3km events. Below are our Age Champions for each event, these students will be presented with their Age Champion medallion at the Senior Fun Run event. The top 5 students from each age group will now represent Camira SS at the Central Comets Cross Country Trials on Thursday 28 April at Grammar Arms Park. I wish all the students competing the best of luck for next Thursday.

Greater Springfield Primary School Sport Term 2 Gala Days

Students in Year 5 and 6 that have nominated to be a part of our Gala Day sporting teams will receive information booklets regarding their nominated sport in Week 2. Students had the option to nominate for Rugby League, Soccer or Netball. It was great to see a number of students sign up to try a new sport and it is very exciting that Camira will have an all-girls rugby league team for the first time. The information booklets will outline the cost, playing venues, training times and any requirements for their sport.

Thank you to everyone that purchased a ticket in the raffle, with specials thanks to all the families that donated items for our prizes. The P&C will be asking for feedback on our raffles in the near future, so keep your eyes glued to our Facebook page for more information on that soon!

P&C Cross Country Sausage Sizzle

As the tradition seems to be at Camira SS, Term 1 was a wash out for the Cross Country Carnival. But despite the rain, the P&C and our army of volunteers still managed to deliver over 310 sausage meal deals to our hungry students! Profits for this fundraiser are still yet to be finalised, but seeing students excited to be eating a warm sausage on bread on such a wet, miserable day encapsulates exactly what our P&Cs purpose is – to support our kids!

Executing this was a mammoth task, and we certainly could not have done it without out superstar volunteers. Huge thanks go to:

Bruce Edwards

Deanne Hyde

Simone Carter

Michelle Norrish

Deb Carey

Mandy Molini

Peta Ellison

Kim Mann

Emma Green

Special thanks also go to some of our Year 6 and Year 4 students that helped us deliver orders to classrooms, and to all other parents that were ready to help at the stall if it had gone ahead.

P&C Annual General Meeting

The P&C will be running our Mothers Day Stall this term. This is one particular fundraiser that we love hosting every year, as its our opportunity to interact one on one with students and help them with purchasing the perfect gift for their loved ones.

The Mother’s Day Stall will be held in Week 3 of this term on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 May.  As we have done in previous years, classes will be allocated a time to visit the stall.  These times will be determined closer to the event.  A product list will be advertised via email and on social media.

This fundraiser is once again, reliant on volunteer assistance. We have a range of tasks that we will require help with, including:

Sorting products – Tuesday 3 March

Morning Stall Assistants x 2 – 8:15am to 11:15am (both Wednesday and Thursday)

Afternoon Stall Assistants x 2 – 11am to 1:45pm (both Wednesday and Thursday)

If you are interested in volunteering for any of these times please contact the P&C at pandc@camirass.eq.edu.au

TUCKSHOP NEWS

Published by Camira State School

Ordering

The Tuckshop will continue to operate 5 days per week as usual for Munch and Crunch, First and Second break orders. Ordering is only available ONLINE through the Qkr! App. No over the counter orders will be accepted during this time. This process will be reviewed by the P&C and school leadership team in two weeks, where we will decide if it is possible to re-introduce over the counter sales.  Please ensure that you have updated your child’s class details on the Qkr! App so that no Tuckshop orders are delivered to the wrong class.

Once over the counter ordering recommences, the P&C will be transitioning to cashless sales. This means that EFTPOS will be the only form of payment available over the counter, and cash will no longer be accepted. We understand that this will impact our Second Break ice block service, which the P&C are working to finding an alternative solution.

Munch and Crunch ordered online will be available for collection from the Tuckshop between 8:30am and 8:45am. Please instruct your child to wait outside the roller doors at the front of the Tuckshop to collect their order. Students are not permitted to collect their Munch and Crunch from the Tuckshop side entry or during class time.

If you have any other questions about ordering please don't hesitate to contact us at pandc@camirass.eq.edu.au

SOS – we need your help!

The importance of volunteer help in the Tuckshop is crucial to the successful running of this service for our students. We are in desperate need of assistance from our parents, particularly in the mornings to assist with food prep and making lunches.

Please note: If we do not receive any volunteer assistance from the school community, the P&C will have no option but to consider other means of keeping this service viable. These options will include a reduction in trading days or could result in possible closure of the Tuckshop.

We have made signing up to volunteer easy, simply go to Camira State School P&C Tuckshop Volunteer Sign Up and choose the day and time you are available to help out! (all volunteers must be able to provide proof of vaccination status prior to volunteering, as mandated by Queensland Government, and any volunteers who are not parents of a student are required to hold a voluntary Blue Card).
